Massage Therapy is a Licensed Health Care Occupation!
The practice of massage therapy in the state of Missouri for fee or for free is regulated, and is RESTRICTED to Missouri State Licensed practitioners. For more information, see Missouri Board of Therapeutic Massage, listed below.
Stringent codes of conduct and ethics are to be upheld by anyone practicing massage in this state, and 41 others.
YOUR REGULATORY BODIES
-FOR SCHOOL OPERATIONS: Your program must be certified to operate by the Missouri Coordinating Board for Higher Education www.dhe.mo.gov, then click on the "Coordinating Board" section to "Programs".
-FOR MENTORING: You can seek approval to be a Certified Mentor in Missouri if you have been licensed for 5 years, and meet other educational requirements. See www.pr.mo.gov/massagether for more details.
-FOR THERAPISTS: You must be licensed to practice, and if you do more than outcall services, your place of business must be licensed as a massage business by the Missouri Board of Therapeutic Massage www.pr.mo.gov, then see "Boards" to "Massage Therapy". If you work for a chiropractor, gym, or private club, one of you must be licensed as a massage business.
-FOR SCHOOL ORGANIZATIONS: Your program can be a member of the AMTA Council of Schools,
www.amtamassage.org, then see "Schools"; or a member of the ABMP School Directory, see www.abmp.com
-FOR CONTINUING EDUCATION PROVIDERS: MTIM WAS approved for Basic Education, School #305461, and IS CURRENTLY APPROVED for Continuing Education, Provider #450530-07, by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork www.ncbtmb.com click on "Schools" or "Providers". Individual states have their own CE provider requirements as well.
LICENSING EXAM BOARDS
The Massage Boards Licensing Exam, or MBLEX, does not require school approval. It is administered through the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards. There are no continuing education or renewal requirements, and your test results are guaranteed to be forwarded to the state licensing board of your choice within 24 hours of your passage. The National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork, or NCBTMB, is an option as a licensing exam or later certification. Eligibility and test results may take up to 3 months. They require ongoing Continuing Education at a rate double to Missouri's, and only from "Approved Providers". Renewal fees are assessed every 4 years for the duration of your certification.
